an easy confirmation. here is the reaction today from senator john mccain, a one-time political ally who once considered hagel as a running mate. i have serious concerns about the positions senator hagel has taken on a range of critical issues in recent years which we will fully consider in the course of the confirmation process. he's talking about iran, his willingness to consider cuts to the budget, and perhaps his pro -pro pro-israel support. >> i'm a united states senator, not an israeli senator, but my first interest, i take an oath of office to the constitution. >> lindsey graham said his former colleague would, quote, be the most antagonistic secretary of defense toward israel in the nation's history. mr. hagel hotly disputes that, he has many defenders including those in the jewish community. hagel has apologized for the tone of his opposition in 1998 to an openly gay ambassadorial candidate. he called him openly, aggressively gay, and nowinsens. joining me now are margaret and peter. margaret, full disclosure, you helped start a group which is now opposed to senator hagel's nomi

the '08 presidential election. the nra in that election endorsed john mccain for president, saying he had steadfastly voted against every gun and ammunition ban in congress. that was the nra endorsement of mccain for president in '08. at the same time the gun owners of america, which is a competing organization, they compete with the nra. they were denouncing john mccain as a liberal gun grabber. not only did they not endorse mccain in his 2008 election, they gave him an f rating on their a to f scale as a politician. this competing group with the nra touts an endorsement on their web page from ron paul. ron paul calling them the only no compromise gun lobby in washington. because you know those nra guys, they're the appeasers. and to prove it the gun owners of america points to moments like after the virginia tech shooting when the nra agreed to go along with an effort by the brady campaign to try to tighten up the part of federal background checks to keep people with diagnosed mental ill nets from getting their hands on weapons like the virginia tech shooter did. the n rachlt did work o

is going to have an easier fight. but there are questions about it. i mean, john mccain who was tortured himself when he was a p.o.w., has raised real questions about brennan's role in the bush administration supporting enhanced interrogation. today, he put out a statement saying he wanted to know, quote, what role he played in the so-called enhanced interrogation progras while serving at the cia during the last administration. i would also point out, wolf, that john mccain is on the same side as the liberal civil rights group the aclu in this. they are raising the same kinds of questions. even though in the past, brennan has said that he opposes these enhanced interrogation techniques. >> we'll watch these confirmation hearings every step of the way. >> should be interesting, both of them. >> low flying helicopters have people in some of the country's biggest cities asking questions. the answers have to do with preparations for a possible terrorist attack. using radioactive dirty bombs. >>> plus, before we get to that, we have some new details emerging about the colorado theater shootin

not seen it, either. we're going to talk about it. cia is in the middle of this controversy. john mccain and a couple of others hated water boarding. water boarding is a part of this story when the movie basically says from the water boarding at guantanemo bay they did pick up clues and names and names led to names and it all led to osama bin laden. what's your take on that? water boarding, gaunt guantanemo. >> i think it's weird that the debate has shifted on the hill from this movie is inaccurate to this movie is a little too accurate. where did you get your information? and i think that's maybe it's just a smoke screen. maybe it's just sort of senators and congressmen throwing up kind of we can have a hearing, we can have an inquiry so they don't have to address the substantive concerns. there are people with stakes in the debate. but most senators and congressmen don't want to talk about torture. >> i think that's right. keith, the cia says another criticism they say is it it was a team effort. not just this one woman. we all buy into that. cia however issued a statement about the wa

have happened between 2006 and today to change john mccain's mind. maybe it was hagel's opinion on sarah palin. hagel said "i think it's a stretch to say that she's got the experience to be president of the united states". he actually was one of the first republicans to come out and question that selection. certainly no republican should be questioning hagel's qualifications, unless you want to go back and look like a bunch of hypocrites. they weren't complaining about dick cheney's qualifications as defense secretary under bush 41, even though cheney had managed to get five deferments from serving in the vietnam war. chuck hagel served in the vietnam war in the same unit with his brother tom, as the president pointed out. how can republicans question hagel's qualifications? today senator hagel accepted president obama's nomination and immediately focused on the troops. >> these are people who give so much to this nation every day. with such dignity and selflessness. this is particularly important at a time as we complete our mission in afghanistan and support the troops and mil

. that was then. now he says, he'll be given a fair hearing, and you have john mccain saying, to allege that hagel is somehow a republican, that's a hard one to swallow. >> i think -- >> what's at work here? >> i think senator hagel was more of a libertarian, if you look at some of his votes. he came from a libertarian side. sometimes that upsets more of the mainstream republicans. i consider myself to have a libertarian streak as well, but i think what mary said is right. he's going to have to answer to some of these issues. they're going to come from both the left and the right. look, this is a process that is important. he will have his day in the hearings. there will be a vote. my guess is at the end of the day that president obama will get his nominee. >> i was going to ask if you think the issues are big. ouch. i hit my hand. let's put iran on the side for a moment. you have the other two trofrg ones you said back 14 years ago, 15 years ago, he called a diplomat aggressively gay. he has apologized recently for that. and then he talked about the jewish lobby, not the israel lobby, and there a

, sharon waxman, editor of the rap.com, also a former "new york times" movie critic. john mccain talked about "zero dark thirty." he was saying, look, this movie makes you think waterboarding and torture is how we got the information that led us to osama bin laden. that's not the case, the movie is inaccurate. do you think the academy's perception of politics and the trut of the movie played a role in why she didn't get the nod? >> let's first point out that the movie did get a best picture nomination and a best screenplay nomination and other nods, but i would tend to agree with you that the fact that kathryn bigelow, the director of the movie and one of the producers behind it wasn't recognized this morning does suggest that the controversy around the film did hurt it, yes, i think so. >> you point out the film itself got nominations. was it perhaps more personal, at her? as opposed to political? >> i don't think it's personal at her, although you can't disassociate the film from the director. i think that is some kind of clear signal. jessica chastain, who we interviewed today who wa
